Yoga for beginners: What to expect in your first month of practice

Are you thinking about starting yoga, but feeling a little bit unsure? You’re not alone.

Almost everyone who walks into my classes for the first time has the same worries: Will I be flexible enough? What if I can’t keep up? What if I look silly? Let me reassure you – your first month of yoga isn’t about mastering complicated poses. It’s about getting to know your body, your breath, and practicing gentle movement that feels supportive.

In my classes, Yoga is for every body, no matter your age, shape, experience, or how long it’s been since you last exercised.

So if you’re just starting out, here’s what you can expect, realistically, from your first month of practice with me.

Week one

In your first week, it’s totally normal to feel a bit clumsy. You’ll likely be a bit wobbly as you begin to get you used to engaging your core, trying basic balancing exercises, and learning breathing techniques. This isn’t about pushing yourself – it’s about getting to know your body, and learning to listen to its cues.

Remember: as your yoga teacher, I’m here to guide you, not force you into shapes that make you feel like a pretzel! Take it slowly, and if you find that something is uncomfortable, pause. We can work on alternative movements that suit your body. Something I often tell my class is that yoga should be ‘oooh’, not ‘owww’!

If you wake up the day after your first practice feeling that you’ve used muscles you’d forgotten about, that’s normal. Yoga uses stabilising muscles that most people rarely engage. It doesn’t mean you’re bad at yoga - it means your body is learning.

Week two

Don’t worry if you’re still a bit shaky in your core poses – your body is still getting used to things. You might also notice that during quieter moments, your mind still wanders. Again, this takes practice. When it happens, just notice it, acknowledge it, and gently bring your focus back to your breath.

It’s also common to struggle with comparison in the first few weeks. If you find yourself looking around and thinking the person next to you seems to have this all sussed out, they don’t – they just keep showing up, which is exactly what you’re doing. So congratulate yourself for that!

Week three

If you’ve made it to week three – congratulations! No sarcasm intended, but I often see that this is the week where motivation can dip a little. However it’s also the week where you’ll begin to see and feel subtle shifts, both physically and mentally. You might notice increased flexibility in your movements, improved posture, and growing core stability.

Away from practice, you might notice that you catch yourself naturally relaxing your shoulders during the day, and feeling more flexible and stronger while doing everyday activities. This is where your practice really starts to pay off!

Week four

By now, you’ll start to feel your confidence growing. You will have become a bit more familiar with the flow of the class, and be more at ease with the environment – and the limits of your body.

Perhaps most importantly, you’ve built something that matters more than flexibility or strength: consistency. Showing up regularly for your practice – even when it feels challenging or unfamiliar – is a powerful step in itself.

After the first month, you may not be able to twist into every pose, and that’s completely fine. Yoga is not about reaching a final destination. It’s a gradual journey of learning, patience, and kindness towards yourself.

And if you’ve made it this far, you’ve already taken the most important step: you started.
